This was a monk returning to his own temple after a visit to another temple. The distance is too far for him to walk, so he must find a ride with a passing truck or car.
When he first began his life in the temple, he was probably a young boy. I realized, as I watched him, that he had been cloistered from the rest of world for most of his life. His world is completely separate from ours.
This is why I painted him standing apart from any sign of contemporary life or civilization.
